History of the house
FORMER CHILDHOOD HOME OF AUSTRALIAN CRICKET LEGEND ON THE MARKET
The childhood home of former Australian cricketing great, Ken ‘Slasher’ Mackay is on the market on Brisbane’s Northside.
Slasher, as he was known for his back-to-the-wall batting style, played 37 tests for Australia, scoring more than 1500 runs. It all started in the backyard of his home on Wellington Street in Virginia, which he shared with his 5 brothers and sisters.
“When we were researching the house, the family told us that Ken was the eldest sibling and every Christmas there would always be cricket in the backyard, and that there was lots of cricket talent in the family,” Aleks Marer said.
Ken attended Virginia State School, located just one kilometre away from the family home. At 15, he started with the Toombul Cricket Club, just a short 3.6-kilometre trek.
Slasher wasn’t the only sporting legend to grace the home. Across the road, sits the popular Virginia Golf Course, where Greg Norman got his start. The ‘Shark’ and fellow golfer Wayne Grady were frequent visitors to the house, to play cards.
While a lot has changed since the Mackay family lived in the property, many long-time locals in the area have special memories of the home and will always remember who once lived there.
